Trees rarely fall without warning. Here's what to look for.

Warning signs

  • Dead or bare canopy: few or no leaves in summer, or bark falling off
  • Cracks or splits in the trunk, especially deep vertical cracks
  • Mushrooms, fungus or soft, crumbly wood at the base
  • A new lean, or soil heaving up on one side
  • Large dead branches hanging over the house, driveway or play area
  • Hollow trunk or cavities
  • Ash trees with thinning crowns, D-shaped exit holes or woodpecker damage, signs of emerald ash borer

Why dead trees are urgent

Dead trees dry out and become brittle. They're more likely to drop limbs or fail in a storm, and more dangerous to cut the longer they stand.
