The emerald ash borer, an invasive beetle, has been killing ash trees across Kentucky for more than a decade. Ash once made up roughly one in six trees in Louisville's canopy, according to Louisville Public Media.
How to spot an infested ash
- Thinning leaves at the top of the tree
- Small D-shaped holes in the bark
- Woodpecker damage and strips of missing bark
- Sprouts growing from the lower trunk
Treat or remove?
Healthy, valuable ash can sometimes be protected with insecticide treatments by a certified arborist. Once a tree is heavily infested or dead, removal is usually the safe option: dead ash become brittle and can fail without warning.
